Buildings

As a leader in the green building industry, our primary commitment is to provide our clients with sustainable, high-performance buildings ... buildings that cost less to operate, are healthier for occupants, and are less damaging to the environment.

HDR's expertise in complex building types, coupled with our expertise in sustainability, assures our clients a quality building that meets their current and future needs. We have worked on green buildings of all types throughout the country, from hospitals and laboratories to government buildings and commercial office buildings. Our services and expertise range from buildings that have a few sustainable elements to buildings that push the technological and environmental envelope.

Green buildings offer a number of benefits. We can help you determine which benefits you will profit from most. If you are seeking lower operating costs or increased building value, higher productivity or reduced absenteeism, we can help you implement the green building strategies to achieve those goals.

HDR Sustainable Design Services provides the following services related to sustainable building design:

Site and Building Design

Our architecture and engineering design services culminate in state-of-the-art, high-performance buildings that improve the overall economic and environmental performance of the facility. Many of these buildings are designed using nationally recognized sustainable guidelines such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria, and the Green Guide for Healthcare.

LEED® Consulting

HDR provides facilitation and consultation related to the use of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System for our own projects as well as on a consulting basis to other design teams. HDR has more than 13.7 million square feet of LEED projects, including two Platinum rated, two Gold rated, eight Silver rated, and six Certified rated. With more than 416 LEED Accredited Professionals, 19 LEED certified projects and 68 LEED registered projects at various stages of design, HDR is well positioned to help our clients successfully achieve LEED certification.

Sustainability Reviews

Our team reviews existing site, building, or campus plans and recommends appropriate sustainable design concepts that can be integrated to improve building performance, optimize energy and resource efficiency, and reduce environmental impact.

Sustainable Material Selection

Our experts assist in selecting materials that fit the sustainable design requirements of the project using thoroughly-researched, substantiated criteria such as durability, recycled content, rapidly renewable material sourcing, low-emissions, and recyclability. We coordinate the products in HDR’s Sustainable Products Database with our master specifications, and work with our designers to maximize sustainability and performance. HDR's Sustainable Products Database currently features over 1,200 products.

Sustainable Specifications

We facilitate the successful construction of your project with project specifications that include sustainable requirements and processes. HDR’s master specifications have been modified to assure that a minimum level of sustainable design is included on all projects. Our Sustainable Specifications Manager also works with clients to green their own specifications.

Process and Guideline Development

We assist project teams with integrating sustainable design into existing or future planning, design, or construction processes through the development of sustainable design guidelines.

Training and Outreach

HDR offers a broad range of training topics as well as customized training and outreach services. Sample topics include: Introduction to LEED, No-cost Sustainable Design Solutions, and Sustainable Schools. We have trained over 3,000 state, federal and corporate clients.

Energy Modeling

HDR uses DOE2, Trane Trace, and Energy10 modeling software to evaluate energy-efficient design options. We have been successful at identifying energy-efficient solutions that have projected performance more than 70% more efficient than required by ASHRAE 90.1.

LEED/CHPS Charrette and Target Development

HDR provides charrette facilitation with the purpose of setting project-specific sustainable design goals. The focus of these charrettes is often LEED or the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) program, but may be tailored as requested by our clients.

Sustainable Design Economic and Environmental Modeling

HDR has developed a program to evaluate the economic and environmental risks associated with sustainable design options. This allows our design teams and clients to make informed decisions about the probable savings and benefits of sustainable solutions.
